School Board Election Results
Here are the unofficial results of the David Douglas School Board elections held May 21. Cheryl Scarcelli Ancheta, Donn Gardner and Kyle Riggs are incumbents who retained their seats on the Board. Christine Larsen and Shannon Raybold are newly elected members.
Student Art Show at District Office
The David Douglas High School Art Department would like to invite everyone to view our High School Student Art Show from May 13th - May 24th. Student work will be on display during regular building hours in the District Office Breezeway (1500 SE 130th Avenue). The students will be displaying their work in drawing, photography, jewelry, crafts, calligraphy, painting, ceramics, and other media. Please come and enjoy the many works and talents of the students here at David Douglas High School.

David Douglas Class of 2013 Graduation
The fifty-seventh annual commencement of the David Douglas High School Class of 2013 will be held on Wednesday, June 5th at 7:00pm in the Earl A. Chiles Center, University of Portland. Admission is by ticket only.
For those of you unable to attend, we will be streaming the ceremony live here beginning promptly at 7:00pm on June 5th. Please check back at that time.
Trophies for DD Band/Orchestra at State
It was a big weekend at the OSAA State Band/Orchestra Championships for David Douglas High School and the entire District music program.
Summer Schedule Changes
The last day of the 2012-13 school year is Thursday, June 13, which is a half-day of school for students. On June 13, elementary schools will release students at 11:55 a.m. (parents, please be prepared to pick your students up at the bus stop); middle schools and David Douglas High School will release at 10:30 a.m.; Fir Ridge Campus will release at 10:40 a.m.
Because of bond construction projects (thank you, voters!), two schools will get out earlier. The last day of the school year for students at Menlo Park Elementary and Ventura Park Elementary is Tuesday, June 11, which is a full day of school. Both schools, along with the North Powellhurst building, will be closed to the public this summer while construction goes on.
Please mark your calendars now for a change to the school start date for the fall. The 2013-14 school year begins on Monday, Sept. 9, one week later than normal. That’s right. Summer break will be one week longer this year.

Teacher Appreciation Week

The David Douglas School District was created more than 50 years ago for only one purpose, to educate students. We are incredibly fortunate in this District to have hundreds of dedicated, selfless and highly professional educators who strive every day to help each of our students succeed to their highest potential.
David Douglas Receives AP Grant
The David Douglas School District has received an Equal Opportunity Schools matching grant that will allow David Douglas High School to expand its Advanced Placement (AP) course offerings and recruit more students into the high-rigor classes, especially underserved students.
Committee Approves 2013-14 Budget
The David Douglas Budget Committee has unanimously approved a 2013-14 school year budget. For the first time in three years, the budget does not include any significant cuts in personnel or service. It also does not include any significant additions to programs, but seeks to maintain current service levels.
New Principal at Floyd Light
Doug Pease, with his wife Cindy, after the David Douglas School Board appointed him the new Principal at Floyd Light Middle School.A Seaside middle school principal has been selected to be the new Principal at Floyd Light Middle School. Doug Pease was recommended following a rigorous application process, and the David Douglas School Board appointed him during its April meeting.
Mr. Pease begins his duties on July 1. He replaces Floyd Light Principal Mark Gaulke, who is retiring.
In his philosophy of student achievement submitted with his application, Mr. Pease said he will focus on academic advancement for every student.
Community Meeting to Discuss Treatment Clinic
David Douglas community members have organized a special community meeting to discuss and ask questions about a counseling and treatment clinic that recently moved into the District. The clinic, Whole Systems Counseling and Consultation, includes convicted sex offenders among its clientele.
The clientele has raised some concerns among neighbors of the clinic, located at 126th and Stark St., and they organized the meeting to discuss those concerns.
Johnston, Guynes named Oregon Principals of the Year
Two school principals in the David Douglas School District have each been named 2013 Principal of the Year for the state of Oregon by the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators (COSA).
Candidates File for Five Open Board Seats
Five of the seven positions on the David Douglas School Board will be open for election on the upcoming May 21 ballot. The deadline for interested candidates to file for election has passed, and the District has eight candidates running for the five open positions.
Notice of Budget Committee Meeting
The David Douglas School District will hold a public meeting to discuss the budget for the fiscal year July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014 on the following dates:
April 22, 2013 - Budget Committee Meeting/Testimony received.
Finding David Douglas
The David Douglas Historical Society will present an evening of FREE entertainment for the community featuring the documentary film, “Finding David Douglas”. Celebrate the life and heritage of David Douglas; meet the producer and director, Lois Leonard, and other special guests. Enjoy live performances of Scottish musicians, singers and dancers. There will be raffle tickets for a trip to Scotland, drawings and more.
Apply Now for Open Enrollment to David Douglas Schools
The David Douglas School District is currently accepting applications for students to attend schools in David Douglas through Open Enrollment. Under Open Enrollment, students enrolled in a David Douglas school become permanent students of the David Douglas School District and need not reapply each year.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
Whether your student is in elementary, middle, or high school, parent-teacher conferences are an important opportunity to discuss how your child is doing in school. It is also an opportunity to strengthen the partnership with your child’s teacher.
Here are some tips to keep in mind as you prepare for your conference:
- Look over recent assignments and test grades so that you know how your child has been performing in class.
Connect to Kindergarten at your Neighborhood School
Your neighborhood elementary school will be hosting a spring Connect to Kindergarten event for all upcoming 2013-2014 kindergarten students. This fun event will be held on Tuesday, April 23rd.
Classified Employees Week
Each year at this time, the David Douglas School District joins school districts from throughout Oregon to honor our staff members who do the heavy lifting and behind-the-scenes work to make our schools great places to teach and learn.
Elementary school calendar change
Elementary school families, please note that Friday, April 26 is now a non-school day for elementary students. Elementary staff will have a curriculum planning and professional development day on Friday, April 26, and students will not be in school on that day.
